The house

The old winemaker's house

The front house dates from 1831, the rear house from 1598. The winemaking is history, the house still stands, on the street that leads up to the castle.

Built for wine

A winemaker's house is laid out differently from a home. The courtyard was a working yard, which is why it is cobbled rather than landscaped. Sandstone and timber framing all around, wooden floors and round arches in the masonry inside.

None of it was added later to look old. It was already there. Winemaking in this house has ended. The front house and the rear house still stand.

The street

Schloßstraße leads from the village up to Hambach Castle. In the old photograph from the family album it is cobbled, the sign of the Gasthaus Pfalz hangs on the left, a half-timbered house stands on the right. Number 18 is already in the picture.

Today you stay at number 18 and walk the 1.4 kilometres up to the castle in about half an hour.

Drinking wine in Hambach

There is still wine here, just no longer from this house. Hambach sits in the middle of the wine region and the wine taverns are within walking distance: the Fassdaube 100 metres away, the Fuxbau 150, the Mohre Jule 250. Eva and Jon will gladly tell you where it is worth going.

If you would like a wine tasting, Eva and Jon will help you book one, for instance at the Sommer, Müller or Friedrich wineries in Hambach.

An overview of the wine taverns and restaurants in the village is under Eating & drinking.
